Funny concept of security in the Shanghai metro

As I have written last year, Shanghai has installed many security check points in every metro station before the opening of Shanghai 2010 World Expo. Well, those so-called security measures are here to stay. World Expo has been over for many months now, but the scanners are staying.

Yesterday, I was entering the metro station as I would normally. At the security check point, a guy cut in front of me, and went in without submitting his backpack to the scanner. I thought that the security measure has been relaxed a bit, and now backpacks need not be scanned any more. Therefore, I just walked in, without scanning my backpack either. The “security guy” caught me, asking to submit my backpack to the scanner. I asked why the guy who just walked in in front of me needed not to do so. He replied, so confidently on his right as a security guru: “Because he carries his bag in his hand, and you carry your bag on your shoulder. According to the rules, all bags that are carried on shoulder need to be scanned.”

I was… speechless!
